I have only drunk Vega Sicilia‘s Unico Gran Reserva once. It was the 1991 and it was a fantastic wine. Over two long hours it was complex, brooding and as solid as a rock. Pure Ribeiro del Duero fruit and spice. Imperious to the very last drop.
I had ordered a magnum of 1965 for a client which arrived in my warehouse yesterday; at least almost arrived, it was, er, incomplete.
Somehow in transport the cork had slipped down the nexk into the bottle allowing a trail of tinto fino and cabernet sauvignon to mark its route from Barcelona to Beaune.
It’s the first time that has happened to me, and leaves me with roughly two fifths of a magnum which obviously I cannot send to my client. The foil is intact, so maybe I willtry a drop tonight. It may still be drinkable, stranger things have happened.
But what a waste and what a pain…not least because it’s going to cost me a grand.
